Okavango Delta and makoro trip
Hallo from warm Rundu, Namibia.
Luckily I have more wifi available these days and catching up on blog posts.
The last few days next to the Okavango Delta was awesome! The best camping I had so far. We arrived in Maun (eastern side of Okavango river) the 4th of June and spent two days there on the banks of the Okavango river.

The 5th we went on a traditional mokoro ride. What they did not tell us was that there would be a lot of walking involved to spot some animals. So, I did this all in sandals and fully loaded camera gear with flu in my system. But we saw some zebras, giraffes (in the distance) and two elephants that came close to us.

The following day we drove around Okovango river at western side and camped at Drotsky’s lodge, 7km before the Namibian border. The hippos were right across our tent in the river. Also a lot of monkeys that asked for food – or should I say stole some food.

My experience of Botswana was made by the friendly local people. Everyone is polite and try to talk to you. Even the traffic officer that wrote us a speeding ticket. It also did help that Setswana was one of my subjects at university and therefore I can communicate the basics. They really appreciate my willingness to speak with them in there language.
We will enter Angola tomorrow at the border post of Katwitwi, about 150km or so from here. From there it would be a lot of driving from Angola mainland to the coastal area with a few bush camps. So i will try and update the blog again when back in civilization in Angola. This will also be the first country where I will test the waves with my surfboard and some fishing. Can’t wait!! Water temperature south of Angola is cold but gets warmer as soon as you go more north to Luanda.
Some pictures of where we are at the moment: Cubango river here in Rundu, Namibia. A lovely campsite.

So far our trip has gone smooth with some minor problems. My father got flu when we started with our journey and now I have the nasty virus. Still trying to recover. Today we went to a toyota service center in Rundu and sorted out some cleaning of filters and repair of wheel flaps. Tonight we had some electrical problems. Whithout it our freezers and fridge will be useless as well as our lightning system. But will sort out that tomorrow morning. My father had a bad fall from the ladder of the tent early this morning and injured his head but he is recovering well.
Until later…

Sounds like an amazing adventure so far! Loving the updates! Hope your dad’s head heals up quick and you get over the flu…if not, I am sure the ocean will sort you out 🙂 Enjoy!
Ag dit klink lekker. Ja mens moet seker maar paar hiccups verwag, solank dit net minor bly. Geniet dit baie.
