On our way: Pre-Botswana

Hallo,

Finally we are on our way through Africa for 3 months!!

However, the route now is different. For the past year we planned our route through West Africa. All the way from Cape Agulhas to Spain. This did not happen because of a few reasons:

1) Most Western Africa countries require an invitation letter with the visa – guess i have to work more on my friendship in Africa!

2) We can only apply for a visa of the first few countries in RSA. The rest we have to apply as we go along. No guarantee that we will get it in other countries!

3) Countries like Nigeria have a huge safety issue with military escort required while some problems already crossed Benin and Togo.

3) The recent outbreak of ebola in DRC, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

We came to the conclusion that it is not worth taking the risk. This is obviously devastating for us since we spend a lot of time and money planning this! But the adventure must continue.

We will now drive through Eastern part of Africa (see route on top bar of home page). This will still be beautiful with supreme wildlife. Can’t wait!! The good news is that we are rigged like it is Western Africa. Geared for every situation life will throw at us. Outdoor shower, canned food, roof tent, extra 127L fuel tank, 90L water tank and enough power to light up darkest Africa. This will now come in handy for bush camps.

While writing this blog post, we are all ready driving from Upington (where we spent our first night camping at Monate lodge; -28,3805556, 21,15611111111111)) to Kgalagadi Lodge just 6 kilometers before Twee Rivieren at the border of Botswana. Hopefully tomorrow we can start our journey through Kgalagadi Transfrontier park. This will be a few days.

Will post soon again…
